When is a stand-alone permit the right one?
The City describes the stand-alone plumbing permit as the one for work that is not related to other construction proposed for a building. If the plumbing or heating is part of a renovation that needs a building permit, it goes with that application instead. Applications for stand-alone plumbing and drain permits are made online through Toronto Building's online services, with drawings and forms as PDF files (City of Toronto).
What should I ask before the work starts?
- Does this job need a permit, and who is applying for it?
- Is the permit fee included in the price, or separate?
- When will the inspection be, and do I need to be home?
- For gas work: is the company a TSSA-registered contractor? See who can work on gas.
If the job qualifies for the City's basement flooding subsidy, a backwater valve needs its permit for the subsidy too. Jackman Mechanical prices each job directly with you; the fees above are the City's, not ours.
