Smell gas? Leave now.
Enbridge Gas says to evacuate right away, leaving doors and windows open behind you if you can do it without delay, and not to use phones, switches or electronics on the way out. Once you are safely away, call its 24-hour emergency line at 1-866-763-5427 or 911 (Enbridge Gas). Natural gas has an added smell like rotten eggs, and a hissing sound can also mean a leak. Call us for the repair after.
Who is allowed to install a gas line in Ontario?
Not just anyone. The TSSA, which regulates fuels safety in Ontario, says maintenance of furnaces and fuel-fired appliances must be performed by TSSA-registered contractors, and that all registered contractors are required to hire TSSA-certified gas technicians (TSSA). Its registered fuels contractor search lets you check a company first. The gas work guide explains it in full.
What will the request form ask about a gas line?
| Question | The choices |
|---|---|
| What is it for? | BBQ · Stove · Dryer · Heater · Something else |
Photos that help. The most useful are where the appliance will go, and your gas meter.
Say in the description where the appliance will go and where your gas meter is. If it is a BBQ, say which side of the house the deck or patio is on.
What does a gas line to an appliance look like?
Gas comes in through the meter and regulator outside, runs as a tagged line inside, and drops to each appliance through its own shutoff valve, with a drip leg below it. A photo of your meter and of the spot where the appliance will go shows us most of what we need to see.
Do I need a carbon monoxide alarm with a gas appliance?
Yes. The Government of Ontario says a home with a fuel-burning appliance must have a carbon monoxide alarm beside each sleeping area and, since January 1, 2026, on every storey, including storeys without bedrooms (Government of Ontario). The alarm guide covers where they go and what to do when one sounds.
